This article will answer the most commonly asked questions about the ION Director.

What is the ION Director?

The ION Director is an automated testing device made for saltwater aquariums. The IOND works alongside a GHL Doser to automate your testing needs. Based on the outcome of each test result, the IOND can automatically adjust your existing dose schedules for the tested parameters.

What does the IOND test for?

The IOND will test 5 parameters:

  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Nitrate
  • Sodium

How accurate and precise is the IOND?

The ION Director is in a class of its own.

Outperforming today’s conventional test kits, the IOND comfortably provides an accuracy / precision of +/- 2% or +/- 2ppm (largest value) in high precision mode and +/- 3% or +/- 3ppm (largest value) in normal measurement mode. Through extensive testing, the IOND provides the highest possible accuracy and precision for a device of its class.

How much aquarium water is used per test?

Depending on the mode, as little as 14ml or 21ml per test!

Does the IOND produce any waste water?

With the ION Director you have two options:

  • Collect the waste water into a waste container
  • Drain the waste water back into the aquarium

These are the amounts produced at the end of each measurement:

Standard mode
32ml in total (14ml water sample, 9ml Reference A and 9ml Reference B)
14ml of actual water pulled from aquarium

High Precision mode
47ml in total (21ml water sample, 13ml Reference A and 13ml Reference B)
21ml of actual water pulled from aquarium

How long does it take for the IOND to complete 1 test?

Standard mode
24 minutes

High Precision mode
30 minutes

How many times per day can the IOND test?

The ION Director can be set to automatically test anywhere between 1 – 24 times per day.

How long does the IOND sensor last?

The IOND MUI sensor will last a minimum 6 months.

What determines the lifespan of the IOND sensor?

The lifespan of the sensor is determined by various factors, water quality being the most important one. If the sample water contains high levels of organics and nutrients, the sensor may experience more wear. On the other hand, if the water quality is good, the sensor will see a lengthier life. The frequency of tests performed also play a role in the lifespan of the probe.

To put it into perspective, if one tests 500 times with “dirtier” water compared to 500 times with “cleaner” water, the lifespan of the sensor will not be the same.

Nonetheless, the minimum 6 month period still applies.

How will I know when it’s time to replace the sensor?

When we designed the IOND, we wanted to make something that was as maintenance friendly as possible, especially with the MUI sensor. We wanted to take the guess work out of sensor replacement intervals. For that reason, we introduced Sensor performance check.

Sensor performance check” is a unique feature that takes the guess work out of sensor replacement intervals by monitoring the performance of the MUI sensor. During an IOND measurement, the sensor undergoes a performance check to make sure it is running at optimal levels. When the sensor falls outside of the optimal performance range, the IOND will let you know it’s time to consider replacing the sensor.

Can I chart and log IOND test results?


Measurement results are automatically logged (in myGHL) by the primary device controlling the IOND. This data can later be viewed on your platform of choice; GHL Connect app or myGHL website.

See the most recent test results or view past results to get a better understanding of how your parameters have changed over time. With IOND data logging, you can see today’s results, last week or month’s results and beyond.

Can the IOND adjust my dosing schedule?


Aside from it’s measurement capability, IOND users will also have the option to enable auto-adjustment control over existing dosing pump schedules. Based on the outcome of each test result and control settings you enter, the IOND will automatically determine how much of a dose adjustment is necessary so it can maintain your parameter(s) as stable as possible.

Does the IOND have any “verification” or “re-test” capability?


IOND owners have the option to use our “Double-check” feature which allows the device to perform an additional measurement in case the new results deviate by more than a certain amount when compared to the previous result. This feature comes in handy because if the IOND performs a measurement during a water change, auto top off or dosing event, the outlier results can be discarded after the re-test is completed.

Is a dosing pump required to run IOND?


The ION Director is a testing station which requires a GHL Doser 2.1 to run it. The GHL Doser will feed the IOND a sample of your tank water and reference fluids for the measurement process.

Does the IOND require a ProfiLux controller to use it?


You do not need a ProfiLux controller to use the ION Director.

To get started with testing, you would only need the IOND device and a Standalone GHL Doser.

Can I use a KH Director and ION Director together?


As long as you have either a Standalone Doser or ProfiLux (3 and higher) for a master device, you can conveniently integrate both devices (KHD / IOND) into one system.

Which IOND set do you recommend?

The ION Director is offered in a Standalone and Slave set. The one you should choose will depend on the equipment you currently have…

This set will include a Standalone GHL Doser 2.1. The SA doser will be the brains of the system and will be the one controlling the ION Director. We recommend this set if you do not own a GHL Standalone Doser or ProfiLux controller (3 and higher).

IOND Slave set
This set will include a Slave GHL Doser 2.1. This slave doser will connect to an existing master device (Standalone GHL Doser or ProfiLux controller). The IOND in this set will also be controlled by the master device. Choose this if you already own a SA doser or ProfiLux controller (3 and higher).
