Summary #
This article covers two functions that automatically adjust lighting intensity over time based on different triggers: Acclimation gradually ramps brightness up or down over a defined period of days โ useful when introducing new corals or plants to an existing lighting program โ while Temperature-Dependent Light Reduction reduces or switches off lighting when a temperature sensor reports that the nominal temperature has been exceeded, helping prevent the lights from adding unnecessary heat on warm days.

Acclimation #
Acclimation scales the brightness of all dimmable channels simultaneously over a defined period, interpolating a daily factor between a start and end intensity. It applies to every dimmable channel automatically. Open it via Illumination โ Acclimation.
- Active: Enables or disables the acclimation period.
- Start โ Date / Intensity: The period begins on this date, with all dimmable channels scaled to this percentage of their normal brightness.
- End โ Date / Intensity: The period ends on this date, at this percentage.
A daily scaling factor is calculated between the two โ for example, starting at 40% and ending at 100% over five days results in 40%, 55%, 70%, 85%, and 100% on consecutive days. The same mechanism works in reverse for gradually dimming down. A chart at the bottom visualizes the resulting intensity curve over the chosen period.
Temperature-Dependent Light Reduction #
This function reduces or switches off lighting when a temperature sensor reports that the water is too warm, preventing the lights from adding unnecessary heat. All values are relative to the nominal temperature set for the chosen sensor โ not absolute temperature thresholds. It must be enabled per Illumination channel โ see the Channel Settings section of the Lighting Schedules article. Open the global parameters via Illumination โ Temp.-dep. lightred.
- Determining temperature probe: Selects which connected temperature sensor drives the reduction.
The behavior then differs depending on whether a channel is dimmable or not:
Dimmable Channels #
- Min. temperature excess: How much the nominal temperature must be exceeded before reduction begins. Below this value, lighting runs at full intensity.
- Max. temperature excess: How much the nominal temperature must be exceeded for the channel to be switched off completely. Between the two thresholds, brightness is reduced proportionally along a ramp.
For example, with a nominal temperature of 26 ยฐC, a minimum excess of 2 ยฐC, and a maximum excess of 4 ยฐC: at 28 ยฐC reduction begins, at 29 ยฐC brightness is already reduced by 50%, and at 30 ยฐC the channel switches off completely.
Non-Dimmable Channels #
- Shut off limit: How much the nominal temperature must be exceeded before the channel is switched off.
Once switched off this way, the channel does not come back on when the temperature drops โ it only switches on again when the next scheduled on-time in its illumination curve is reached. This is intentional behavior, particularly for gas discharge lamps that shouldn’t be switched on and off continuously.
Notes #
- For temperature-dependent light reduction, make sure the nominal temperature for the chosen sensor is correctly configured โ all excess thresholds are calculated relative to that value.
