Summary #
The ProfiLux continuously measures connected sensors โ such as temperature, pH, redox, conductivity, level, and flow โ and uses the readings to regulate connected outputs: switch sockets, 1-10V interfaces, pumps, and lighting. This article explains the operating concept behind the ProfiLux functions, and how the system connects with the wider GHL ecosystem.
Applies to #
- ProfiLux 4 Series (incl. Industrial Line / IL)
- ProfiLux 3 Series
- ProfiLux Mini / Light (WiFi)
Overview #
At its core, the ProfiLux continuously measures connected sensors and regulates connected outputs accordingly โ highly accurate monitoring and control of parameters such as pH, temperature, redox, conductivity, level, and flow, with alarm functions and data logging built in.
Available sensor types, PAB support, and expansion options vary by model โ see the ProfiLux product overview for details on your specific model.
Extending the system #
A single ProfiLux already covers most core functions, but the system is designed to grow with your aquarium:
- Expansion Cards: Add more sensor inputs and other expansions directly to the ProfiLux โ additional pH, redox, conductivity, and digital inputs, among others โ without replacing the controller. See Expansion Cards โ Setup Guide.
- PAB (ProfiLux Aquatic Bus): Connects additional GHL devices to your ProfiLux, extending what your system can do beyond the examples above โ automated dosing with the GHL Doser, continuous alkalinity monitoring with the KH Director, calcium and magnesium tracking with the ION Director, or simply more switchable sockets via a Powerbar. Everything is configured and monitored from the same ProfiLux interface. See PAB โ Connection & Configuration Guide.
How it works #
Function vs. Hardware #
Nearly every setting on the ProfiLux falls into one of two categories:
- Function settings define what should happen โ for example, a target temperature, a lighting schedule, or a pump group’s behavior.
- Hardware settings define what carries it out โ for example, which switch socket or which 1-10V interface is assigned to that function.
Keeping these separate means you can change one without touching the other. For example, you can move your heater to a different switch socket without changing any of your temperature settings, or swap which sensor drives a given output without rewiring anything.
As a general approach, it helps to set up the function first, then assign the hardware to it.
Examples / Use cases #
Temperature control #
- Function: Set the target temperature and hysteresis on the Temperature sensor’s settings page. See Sensors โ Configuration Guide.
- Hardware: Assign a switch socket to react to the Temperature sensor’s regulation output, so it switches your heater (and cooling, if present) accordingly. See Switch Channels โ Configuration Guide.
Lighting #
- Function: Build the lighting schedule โ brightness curve, color mix, and timing. See Lighting Schedules โ Configuration Guide.
- Hardware: Assign the schedule’s Illumination channels to a switch socket (non-dimmable), a 1-10V interface (dimmable ballasts), or the Mitras Lightbar/Slimline or Mitras LX interface, depending on what’s connected. See Switch Channels, 1-10V Interfaces, or Mitras Lightbar & Slimline Setup Guide.
Level control #
- Function: Define the level sensor’s operating mode and behavior โ for example, top-off or automatic water change. See Level Control & Leakage Detection โ Setup Guide.
- Hardware: Assign a switch socket to react to the level control output, so it switches your dosing or fill pump.
Pump control #
- Function: Set up a pump group and its wave pattern or flow behavior. See Pump Groups โ Configuration Guide.
- Hardware: Assign a pump via Versia-Controller, 1-10V interface, or switch socket to the pump group, depending on which pump type is connected.
Timer-controlled devices #
- Function: Configure the timer โ on/off times, or a short/cyclic interval. See Timer โ Configuration Guide.
- Hardware: Assign a switch socket to react to the timer, so it switches the connected device accordingly.
